COUP – Cockpit for Collaborative Urban Planning

Professorship Digital City Science of HafenCity University, Hamburg

The COUP was created as an interactive medium for group collaboration and decision-making in urban planning. It allows design professionals to create in-depth analysis of design proposals in real time using an AR table and associated website. Both provide simulation modules such as wind, pedestrian movement simulation, and more for various key functions in urban design. Here, new building configurations can be jointly created using physical objects and analyzed through the simulations. These can then be examined in more detail in the web application. The COUP was planned as a planning module for architecture and urban planning firms to enter into a joint discussion with the help of design objects and to offer the possibility of obtaining simulation results in the early design phase. In HCU’s Master of Urban Planning, the COUP is used in courses for problem solving within projects.

Legacy of Tomorrow

Artificial Rome GmbH, Berlin

Legacy of Tomorrow was produced for Metaverse Fashion Week 2022 under the motto “Future Heritage”. The challenge was to make various fashion pieces and fabrics available in outstanding visual quality as a multi-user experience. The event was to be an equal alternative to the real fashion show and had to be technically accessible with various end devices. The goal was to take the otherwise very exclusive runway show to a new and extraordinary level in a fascinating world. The virtual space allows unlimited scope for expression and storytelling around designer fashion. In doing so, the applied pixel streaming enables a high-definition real-time experience based on the internet connection. The setup gives designers the chance to present hyper-complex fashion pieces and historical garments in digital form. In addition, various interaction mechanisms promote a collaborative experience.

VR Giants

Risa Interactive, Graz

In VR Giants, you and your fellow player take on the roles of Goliath, a giant controlled by the VR player, and David, a small person controlled by the on-screen player. Together, the two must solve puzzles as they adventure through deserts, icebergs, lava caves and pastures to ultimately rescue David’s lost sheep. The true magic of the game lies in the fine balance of power between the small and large players. Goliath is chained to an anchor, which is why he can only move within a limited range. Because of his size, he can lift, manipulate or throw heavy objects and is invincible. David, on the other hand, can move freely but is vulnerable and needs help from Goliath to reach higher places. Only through good communication and teamwork can you succeed in solving the tasks together. More on -> https://store.steampowered.com/app/1124160/VR_Giants/

Victor Stocker, Halle (Saale)

In this VR puzzle game, the player controls the ghost of the late Dr. Frankenstein. Shortly before his death, he invented a machine that creates a ball of ectoplasm that he can touch from the afterlife. This is his only way to interact with the world of the living as a ghost. Using the ectoplasm ball, he can create chain links to form useful tools to operate his machines. Help him fulfill his last will, complete his creation and take over the monster’s body so he can walk among the living again.

Nominated for Interactive Education

UYC – My AR Creature Workshop

slanted realities, Berlin

As part of the Ukrainian Youth Club, an initiative for refugee youth from Ukraine, the goal was to create a place for integration, learning and connection. For this purpose, we developed a workshop format in which the young people were given the tools to design and implement augmented reality content: After a short introduction, participants sketched their own creatures on paper. Then they modeled them in 3D, drew individual textures and designed individual animations. In addition, individual QR codes were printed on postcards to share and permanently keep the AR experience. The project combines education with new technology and opens up a whole new world of learning for young people. It promotes creative design, teamwork and offers an interactive experience. The workshop turns young people themselves into experience designers who are inspired to actively shape their environment with new media.

Deepfake Detective

holoNative, Kiel

AI image processing tools make it possible to quickly measure and alter faces. The fact that our perception is technologically and artificially distorted is a social, political and individual challenge. To raise awareness of this issue, a VR application was developed in which students* are trained as “deepfake detectives” to identify anomalies in various video materials. The game is part of a holistic workshop in which participants learn about the impact of deepfakes on our world, society, and how to deal with altered or authentic content using various techniques.

ErUM VR – Exploration of Space and Matter

Markenfilm Space, Hamburg

The world and our environment consist of countless processes that are not visible and are difficult to understand because they are simply not observable. Modern research brings light into the darkness and explores the secrets of life. But how can these secrets be made tangible? And how can scientific research be made an adventure, fun, but also understandable? The ErUM VR Edutainment Experience answers this question of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research by immersing users directly into the world of science. The goal is to discover the different research areas (particles, matter and universe) of DESY Hamburg in a playful, immersive and informative way.

What are you looking at? Evaluation of Cinematic Virtual Reality using Eye Tracking

Jonas Happ, Hamburg

Not only do new projects advance XR, but also their scientific evaluation! In a VR study, motion sickness and immersion are evaluated using 360° videos and eye tracking data of the viewers is recorded. This is being done in field trials at OMR and VRHQ with a combined total of more than 400 subjects. Heatmaps of the results can be viewed in VR. Analysis of the eye tracking demonstrated Attentional Synchrony (AS) on expected moving Areas of Interest and showed center and horizon bias. The results allow conclusions to be drawn about 360° video production, specifically editing. High AS means 360° video producers can guide viewers through the space and reduce the risk of missing important parts of the story in the 360° space. In addition, audience-dependent advertising effects and the correlation between video rating, immersion, and motion sickness were shown. Based on bachelor thesis.

Paddling to the Future

Marko Stojkovic, Mainz

In collaboration with Stiftung Lebensraum Elbe, we designed an experience to provide a unique and immersive stand-up paddling adventure in Virtual Reality (VR). The main objective of this initiative is not only to promote a large-scale nature conservation project “Hamburg, deine Flussnatur”, but also to increase the empathy and awareness of the citizens of Hamburg towards nature and animals. To enhance the user’s experience, we incorporated a real paddle board that the user can stand on while wearing the VR headset. We also used a real paddle that is tracked using the HTC Tracker 3.0 to simulate the paddle’s movements in VR, creating an unparalleled level of immersion for the user. The use of actual equipment provides an authentic feel that makes the user feel like they are genuinely paddling in Hamburg’s waters. With this project, we have successfully merged technology and nature, resulting in a product that promotes the empathy and understanding of our environment.

From The Main Square

Pedro Harres – Film Universität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, Berlin

A compact illustration of social disruption. A civilization blossoms, with all its contradictions, only to become a danger to itself. Encircling a central square, a new town emerges in all its diversity. A crossroad of stories, buildings, hopes, and conflicts. Social ties and cultures take root. People nurture sympathy and care for their equals, but also animosity towards those who are different. It doesn’t take long for an “us versus them” atmosphere to take over. “From The Main Square” is an interactive VR experience that invites the viewer to witness the rise and fall of a divided society.

Unechte Sachen Lukas Hort, Hamburg

With Puppet Play, anyone can quickly and easily create their own animated movies in VR, with no prior experience. Grab a character and move it around like in real life. Puppet Play can save this movement as an animation in real time. Repeat this a few times and you’ve brought an entire scene to life. Work like real movies in your own virtual studio! Experiment with different angles, make your own tracking shots and play with the light. At the end, the movie can be exported as a regular video to share with friends and on social media. The goal of Puppet Play is to give people from young to old a whole new way to express themselves creatively. To do this, we use the unique interaction capabilities of VR and a playful user experience. Puppet Play originated as a project at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences in the Animation and Game program.

2Sync: Mixed Reality SDK & Tech Demo House Defender

2Sync, Potsdam

The 2Sync SDK enables the development of novel, innovative and immersive mixed reality experiences that automatically synchronize and adapt real and virtual worlds to each user’s environment. In doing so, the applications created are developed to be space-independent so that the objects in the game world adapt to the physical objects in the room in the best possible way. This enables free movement in the real-world environment and application, providing natural interaction with physical objects, significantly higher immersion, lower risks of use, lower cost for developers and users (compared to existing free walk experiences), less preparation time, and higher acceptance of the technology by users due to completely eliminated motion sickness. Our House Defender tech demo showcases the SDK’s features in a playful way, and is already delighting over 20,000 players as they defend their entire homes from the approaching monsters.

VR Installation “Explore the iguversum with the igus:Bike”

igus GmbH, Köln

At the Hannover Messe and Eurobike 2023, we set up our attraction to present the igus:bike and our VR world. Here the visitor could ride with the real igus:bike in a virtual world (iguversum) and collect things there to get into the top list. Coordination and fitness were required here, as well as collecting the right things. Old plastic gives more time, igus components make you faster. With this case you could already link 3 things. A bicycle produced from recycled plastic and maintenance-free with igus components, paired with our digital world, the digital twin of the igus factory, so to speak (in reference to the fact that this was set up here as an attraction and the “real” collaborative world is set up in VR with more direct customer benefits).
